Restorative Practices finds its roots deep within our indigenous societies, where the well-being of the community and its members was preserved through meaningful relationships, communication, emotional connection, and understanding.
However, in our current school communities, the focus often shifts to a reliance on "laws" and individualism. We attempt to manage student behavior through the strict implementation of rules, and then we employ behavioral incentive programs to encourage compliance.
Restorative Practices, on the other hand, advocates for building a community founded on positive communication, emotional connection, understanding, accountability, and the act of repairing harm. It recognizes that the true power for change lies within the strength of our relationships.
By prioritizing meaningful connections and fostering a sense of belonging, Restorative Practices creates an environment where students and staff can feel supported and understood. It encourages empathy and compassion while fostering personal growth and responsibility.
Shifting our focus from "laws" to Restorative Practices empowers our school communities to thrive through the power of positive relationships, ultimately leading to a more harmonious and transformative learning environment for everyone involved.
Restorative practices is a program.
There are no real consequences in restorative practices.
